After struggling with anxiety and finding out I was pre-diabetic, I decided it was time for a lifestyle change. After alternating between unhealthy habits to extreme healthy habits and restrictions, I have now found balance and promote a healthy and maintainable lifestyle. I have been training at the Y for 5 years and have experience working with all different ages, backgrounds, and goals. From prepping an 8-year-old for basketball season, to the single mom of 4 kids needing personal time, to the 74-year-old trying to rehab a knee; everyone can benefit from weight training and movement. I want my clients to learn how to prioritize their own health and find a way to make it a habit in their daily schedule. It's important for my clients to feel comfortable in the wellness center and enjoy coming to the Y no matter where they are in their own fitness journey. Weight training can not only improve your physical health, but your mental health as well. It's crucial to me that my clients experience both benefits and find a place in their life for their own health and wellness.
My fitness journey started in 2018 when I was 20 years old and in college. I was involved in high school sports but had always been overweight and constantly struggled to try and lose weight. When I started college, I ended up gaining over 50lbs which led me to my highest weight of 250lbs, mainly due to not being active and living an unhealthy lifestyle. I was struggling with depression and anxiety and was on a downward spiral I felt I had no control over. It took me realizing that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life being unhappy and hating the person I saw in the mirror to take control of my life and make the changes that needed to happen. Over the last 2.5 years, I have managed to lose 85lbs through weight-training, nutrition, a whole lot of determination, and patience, and have fallen in love with everything fitness. It has been as much a physical journey as it has been a mental health journey. My personal experience sparked my passion to help others who may be struggling with things similar to what I have struggled with and guide them to living a happier and healthier lifestyle. Personal Bio: I’m a retired U.S. Air Force Navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer/Tactical Coordinator with just over elven and a half years of service. In my spare time when I’m not strength training, I love spending time with my wife and 2-year-old daughter Emma, who loves going to the zoo to see the Lemurs! I go fishing when I can and I have a wonderful time making scale model aircrafts. Especially WWII and Vietnam era planes. I am now expanding my hobby to include model wood ships. It keeps me busy!
I am a wife, mom of two wild boys, and a registered nurse. At an early age I realized the importance of exercise, but I was never the athletic type due to lack of coordination. I remember joining my mom in the basement following along with exercise videos (Cher Fitness). As I grew up, I dabbled in different areas of fitness including running, boxing, weightlifting, water aerobics, Zumba, hot yoga, personal training, you name it I tried it! I was trying to find what would motivate and keep me going. I joined the Armbrust YMCA. I realized that this is my happy place! Being greeted with a smile as I walked in the front door, the kindness of the Y care staff that watched my babies while I got an hour of “mommy time,” and the knowledge and willingness of the Wellness staff to help me with my weightlifting journey, I was hooked. Walking in the doors there is an automatic sense of community, pride, and support! As I became more consistent it became glaringly aware to me that this is where I want to be! I have grown strong and confident in skill and ability as a weightlifter and regular exerciser. I even trained for and competed in Life Heavy Things, all on my own! I have worked in many areas in the nursing field, including med/surg, ortho/neuro, home health, outpatient surgery, oncology, infusion and postpartum. I love caring for and interacting with people, but I was feeling burnt out and needed a change from reactive care. I grew numb, I dreaded work, and missed my kids so I knew I needed a change, but what? Something that makes me HAPPY and motivated, where I can still be empathetic and support people be PROACTIVE with their health and wellness. It took a lot of consideration as there are a lot of nursing outlets available, but then I saw the posting for a Personal Trainer at the Armbrust YMCA and it was a no brainer, why not work where I know I am already happy? I am so thrilled to be on this new life mission learning and growing in ways I didn’t know were possible!
